A perfect example of high-quality hormone products is Solvay’s Duphaston® (dydrogesterone), the most prescribed progestogen in Western Europe.
Duphaston® is on the market in more than 90 countries in a large range of indications that are the result of a lack of progesterone in the body, such as menstrual disorders, HRT, and threatened and habitual abortion. The product has also expanded significantly in Asia and Central Europe. The unique manufacturing process for this synthetic progestogen with pure progestogenic effects requires the highest standards of production technology. For this manufacturing process a new modern plant has recently been built by Solvay Pharmaceuticals in The Netherlands.

Progesterone
In women, progesterone is responsible for the development of a healthy uterus lining (endometrium) that is necessary for pregnancy. The body produces progesterone at certain times of the menstrual cycle, causing the uterus lining to flourish. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus lining by the end of the monthly menstrual cycle, the levels of progesterone in the body decrease. This causes the body to shed the uterus lining (a menstrual ‘period’). If a fertilized egg successfully attaches to the uterus lining by the end of the monthly cycle, progesterone levels in the body remain high. This helps maintain a healthy uterus lining for the ongoing pregnancy.

Dydrogesterone helps to regulate the healthy growth and normal shedding of the uterus lining. Therefore, it may be useful in the treatment of menstrual disorders such as absent, irregular or painful menstrual periods, infertility, premenstrual syndrome and endometriosis. In hormone replacement therapy (HRT) following menopause, dydrogesterone can be used to minimize the overgrowth of the uterus lining due to oestrogen (the main female sex hormone). By maintaining the uterus lining, dydrogesterone can also help preventing miscarriage (spontaneous abortion) in women who have suffered repeated miscarriages or who may miscarry.
